Freema Agyeman will reprise her role as Martha Jones for three new audio adventures in The Year of Martha Jones from Big Finish Productions.
Due for release in December 2021, the series is set in the year between the two-part series three finale – The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords. Martha spent this time travelling the world in hiding after The Master seized control, telling people about the Doctor and laying the groundwork for a plan to topple the evil Time Lord.
All three episodes have been written by some of Big Finish’s stalwarts:
- The Last Diner by James Goss
- Silver Medal by Tim Foley
- Deceived by Matt Fitton
Agyeman returned to the role of Martha last year for a one-off Torchwood story reuniting her with Eve Myles and penned by Foley. Martha had previously appeared in the spin-off’s television days for a three episode arc. This time, however, she’s back with her very own series!
“We really didn’t know what Martha was going through during that year on Earth –we see her embark on it, and we see the conclusion of it, but it’s so interesting to really see her as an ordinary person, trying to do extraordinary things. She has incredible independence and strength so I think she can rely on that, but it’s been great to see how she does ebb and flow throughout that journey.”

Joining her is British actress and national treasure Adjoa Andoh, returning as Martha’s mother Francine Jones. Andoh is no stranger to Big Finish, having appeared alongside Colin Baker in 2006. She’s also played a Catkind nun in Tales from New Earth (another TV role Andoh played on television) and the Racnoss Empress in Classic Doctors, New Monsters. Like her onscreen daughter, she’s also made a Torchwood appearance.
“I love Martha Jones and I love tales of an apocalyptic Earth, so when we secured Freema for this box set I was immediately drawn to the idea of Martha’s year on an Earth subjugated by the Master. The Doctor has lost! The Jones family in peril! Toclafane sweeping the skies, and a mission to travel the world, sharing tales of a Time Lord who defeats the monsters. There was so much dramatic potential in this story world and our writers have had a lot of fun with that.”
