McGann & Tennant Double-Feature Vinyl For Time Lord Victorious

The final release from Big Finish in the Time Lord Victorious multi-platform adventure has been revealed. Echoes of Extinction sees the Eighth Doctor and Tenth Doctor running parallel in this ASDA-exclusive double-sided vinyl.

Trapped, a haunted monster waits to consume new victims. It needs help. It needs a doctor. Unfortunately, it also needs to kill whoever it meets. Thrust into immediate danger, and on the back-foot, it will take all of the Doctor’s ingenuity to triumph. Two interlinked adventures.

Two Doctors. One foe.

Echoes of Extinction, Synopsis

Alfie Shaw pens this “separate but linked” adventure in which can reportedly be listened to in any order to get the full story. This appears to be the final (though not necessarily concluding) chapter in Big Finish’s contribution to the Time Lord Victorious multi-platform project from BBC Studios, spanning comics, books and other media.

With the price still to be determined, the vinyl will be available exclusively from selected ASDA stores from 27th November 2020. The digital release will follow a week later, available to pre-order now from the Big Finish website, priced at £8.99.

“Director Scott Handcock has pulled together an amazing who’s who of Doctor Who for the cast. We’ve got alumni from the series as well as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It’s been an honour to create Big Finish’s first commissioned-for-vinyl story, and utterly thrilling to write for both the Eighth and Tenth Doctors.”

Paul McGann and David Tennant star alongside notable guests from around the Whoniverse: Burn Gorman, Mina Anwar, Arthur Darvill, Kathryn Drysdale and Paul Clayton; as well as Inés De Clercq. We don’t know yet if the actors will be reprising their TV and/or audio roles or playing entirely new characters but I’ll keep you posted. (UPDATE: The cast list with their character names has been posted on the Big Finish website.)

“The Doctor in Time Lord Victorious is a different character. He’s slightly lonelier, slightly scratchier, when he doesn’t have one of his pals to hold him back. But it’s nice to tell stories from different times of his life. You just have to try and make sure you’re in the right mindset. The script is fascinating. I’ve only got one side of it, but I’m very aware there’s more to this story, that there’s another Doctor on the other side of the disc. I look forward to getting my LP so I can listen to it all.”

“I’ve read this script twice through and I’m still none the wiser. I’m more confused after the second time than I was after the first. It’s only while working on it that I’ve become aware of how it’s going to be structured. It really appeals to me, the idea that it’s in two parts, on two sides of vinyl. I think it’s fun for people listening. Part of the excitement is when the different incarnations meet…or nearly meet.”

baseless speculation

Since we’re yet to see anything of Time Lord Victorious more than a handful of comic previews and synopses, it seems unfair to speculate on where the arc of the story is going and how they may interconnect. But I’m going to anyway! That’s the advantage of running your own blog.

David Tennant’s quote may hint at something I’ve suggested in the past: that this is an alternative Tenth Doctor who won’t necessarily share the same fate as his normal self. In which case, it’s entirely possible that the familiar cast members may likewise be playing alt-versions of their TV roles. The artwork suggests Darvill and Anwar will play soldiers but I can easily imagine, in a timeline where the Tenth Doctor’s influence and future is different, Rory and Gita’s lives took different turns. But I’m likely to be proven wrong.

Also evident from the artwork is that voice actor Jacob Dudman has a role in the story. While Dudman has played other roles in the Doctor Who universe for Big Finish, he’s probably best known for his impersonations of certain Doctors. Keeping his involvement quiet might suggest a few surprise cameos – though it’s more likely he’s just playing a minor character.

(UPDATE: The cast list with their character names has been posted on the Big Finish website and I’m wrong on every count.)
